Pursue Your Pivot: Is This It?

Have you ever found yourself sitting at your desk, daydreaming, and wondering, "Is this it?" "Is this what I was put on this earth to do?"  I've been there before, and you're not alone!

This discontent with our careers often lingers in the background, a subtle dissatisfaction that grows over time. Of course, you excel in your current role, but it stopped resonating with your professional aspirations somewhere along the way. So, the daily routines became mundane, the challenges predictable, and the passion you once felt dwindled.

Then the question echoes louder: Is this it? And each time you think it, is a moment of self-reflection that sparks a journey toward discovering what truly fulfills you.

Life is short, and it’s up to you to make it sweet.

We've all stood at a crossroads in our professional lives, contemplating the path ahead and questioning if something better awaits us. And as Black women, we're often navigating spaces where our achievements are seldom celebrated, and our passions and needs are overlooked. So, it's time to reclaim our narrative and embrace the courage to ask, "What do I truly want from my professional life?"

Acknowledging the discontent with our current professional situation is the first step towards transformation. It takes guts to question the status quo, challenge society's expectations, and embark on a journey of self-discovery. So, whether it's the monotony of your current role, microaggressions from co-workers, or the proverbial glass ceiling that's left you wanting more—more fulfillment, more purpose, more joy, please know that there is always room for change, and the time is always now.

Consider the stories of Black women who have boldly embraced change. From corporate leaders to entrepreneurs, their journeys inspire us to believe in the possibility of transformation. Their courage to question, "Is this it?" led to remarkable paths that not only fulfilled their professional aspirations but also contributed to the greater good.

The journey toward a more fulfilling professional life is a process, not an overnight transformation. It requires self-reflection, intentional planning, and the courage to pursue what sets your soul on fire. So, if you find yourself asking, "Is this it?" know that you can redefine your narrative and create a professional life that brings you genuine joy and fulfillment.

Cheers to the courage to pivot and the limitless possibilities that await!

Homework: Self-Assessment

Taking inventory of your current professional situation is crucial in understanding where you are and where you want to go. Answer the questions in these ten areas to help you better understand your current professional situation and lay the groundwork for a more fulfilling career path. I am a big fan of journals and taking handwritten notes, but do what works best for you.

1. Reflect on Your Current Role: What aspects of your role do you enjoy and find fulfilling, and what tasks drain your energy or feel monotonous?

2. Assess Your Skills and Strengths: What are your technical and soft skills? What strengths have contributed to your success?

3. Clarify Your Values: What matters most to you professionally, and how does your current role align and conflict with these values?

4. Explore Your Passions: What activities or tasks bring you joy and enthusiasm, and how can you incorporate them into your professional life?

5. Evaluate Work-Life Balance: How is your current work-life balance, and how does it influence your well-being? What changes do you need to achieve a more satisfactory balance?

6. Consider Career Achievements: What patterns or themes in your achievements indicate areas of interest?

7. Seek Feedback: What are your strengths, areas for improvement, and potential growth opportunities?

8. Review Career Goals: Does your current role align with your short- and long-term objectives, and should your goals be adjusted based on your current interests?

9. Assess Job Satisfaction: How is your overall job satisfaction and happiness? What sources of dissatisfaction indicate the need for change?

10. Consider Additional Education or Training: Is additional education or training needed to pursue your desired path? If so, what courses, certifications, or skills would help?
